The Secenic Beauty Of Kedarnath

Legends and a long history surround the Kedarnath Temple. It is believed that the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva’s blessings to atone for their sins following the Mahabharata Battle. But Lord Shiva was not pleased with them, so he pretended to be a bull to get away from them. One of the Pandavas, Bhima, spotted the bull and attempted to grab it, but Lord Shiva leapt into the earth and vanished. At Kedarnath, the bull’s hump is thought to have surfaced, and the temple was constructed there.

Significence of bhimshila in kedarnath temple

Following the catastrophic floods in 2013, the Bhimsila at the Kedarnath Temple gained renewed significance, as it was one of the few edifices that withstood the widespread devastation. This rock formation acted as a bulwark, safeguarding the temple from being swept away entirely by the deluge.

This incident reinforced the conviction of many devotees that the Bhimsila possessed divine powers and was a sacred site that offered refuge and protection to those who sought it.

After the floods, extensive efforts were made to restore and rebuild the affected structures in the region, including the Kedarnath Temple. Bhimsila continues to be a prominent landmark in the area and is viewed as a symbol of resilience and optimism in the face of adversity.

Due to this bhimshila, the large scale destruction in Kedarnath temple has been halted because it obstructs the direct flow of flood water towards the temple; hence, very little damage has happened to the Kedarnath temple and the status of Nandi Maharaj, but many devotees have lost their lives.

The Route to Kedarnath Yatra

The pilgrimage to the revered Kedarnath Temple commences from the hamlet of Gaurikund, situated 16 kilometres away from the temple complex. The sole mode of transport leading up to Gaurikund involves utilizing motor vehicles, which marks the concluding point for motorized transport en route to the Kedarnath Temple. Once at Gaurikund, devotees must engage in a grueling trek spanning 16 kilometers to ultimately reach their destination, the Kedarnath Temple. The journey entails traversing a rigorous and steep hiking trail, entailing a duration of 6 to 7 hours on average. En route, the trekkers are privileged to encounter awe-inspiring vistas of rugged canyons, impetuous rivers, and glistening waterfalls. However, the trek demands optimal physical and mental preparation to surmount the gruelling challenges that lie ahead.
